Editorial & Review Policy

How we research, write, and maintain content on textbooks.co.uk

Who Writes Our Content

All articles on textbooks.co.uk are written by Nigel Hodgson, the site’s founder. Nigel is a UK university graduate and lecturer with direct professional experience of university reading lists and textbook selection across multiple subject areas. Recommendations reflect his genuine assessment of each textbook’s suitability for UK undergraduate students β€” not commercial relationships with publishers or retailers.

Having spent years both buying textbooks as a student and assigning them as a lecturer, Nigel understands which editions genuinely matter, when an older edition is perfectly adequate, and where UK students consistently overpay. That direct experience underpins every article on this site.

Our Research Process

Every textbook guide and comparison on this site is produced through a structured process:

Reading list verification

We cross-reference recommendations against actual UK university reading lists from multiple institutions before making any recommendation. We do not rely solely on publisher claims.

Edition accuracy

We verify current editions directly with UK publishers and booksellers before publication. When new editions are released, we update articles promptly and clearly note what has changed and whether upgrading is necessary.

UK-specific price comparison

We check prices across all major UK retailers (Amazon UK, Waterstones, Blackwell’s, AbeBooks, eBay) rather than defaulting to a single retailer. Where relevant, we verify whether international or previous editions are appropriate alternatives.

Honest assessment

We include genuine pros and cons for every textbook we review. If a book has significant weaknesses for UK students β€” a US focus, outdated content, poor value at its current price β€” we say so, regardless of whether we earn commission from selling it.

Affiliate Relationships & Editorial Independence

textbooks.co.uk earns affiliate commission when you click through to a retailer and make a purchase. We have affiliate relationships with the following UK retailers:

  • Amazon UK (Amazon Associates)
  • Waterstones (Awin)
  • Blackwell’s (Impact)
  • AbeBooks (Impact Radius)
  • eBay UK (eBay Partner Network)

These relationships do not influence our recommendations. The textbooks we recommend are the textbooks we would recommend regardless of whether an affiliate link exists. In many cases we link to multiple retailers simultaneously β€” we do not favour a retailer because it pays a higher commission rate.

We have no commercial relationships with textbook publishers or authors. We receive no payment from publishers for reviews or recommendations. Our affiliate income comes entirely from retailer commissions on sales β€” the price you pay is unaffected.

Corrections & Updates

Textbook editions change regularly. We update articles when new editions are published and aim to verify edition accuracy at the start of each academic year. If you spot an error, an outdated edition reference, or a price discrepancy, please use the contact link in the site header β€” we take accuracy seriously and will update promptly.

Prices shown on this site are checked regularly but change frequently. Always click through to verify the current price before purchasing.
